your design coach & residency host facilitator:
In this bootcamp style residency, I'm sharing my more than 20 years experience not only in graphic design and teaching a bridge to the profession courses like "portfolio", but also my personal experiences in the career journey including in academia and tips gathered over years connected to the design (and academic) world. I've worked with hundreds of students in examining life goals, creating personal brands, revamping projects for portfolio, advising on portfolio and resume, as well as helping each individual to recognize their own voice, strengths, and yes, weaknesses to best address the next steps in your journey.
You are the person that thrives with one-on-one feedback and the rapport needed for honest advice and nurturing the best in yourself to showcase. This residency experience may feel like a bootcamp in that it can be an intensive, deep dive into your current trajectory and what you need to do to reach your goals in a very short amount of time.
Even if you are signed up for a portfolio style class, working on a thesis project with faculty advisors, or maybe have mentors as a junior faculty preparing to apply for tenure, this residency bootcamp interaction can provide another perspective and assistance from someone who wants you to succeed as a coach.
Take this opportunity to venture into this quiet place at the end of the year to rest, be surrounded by nature, and focus on the task at hand including portfolio organizing, portfolio projects, resume design and writing, skills assessment and goal analysis, thesis organizing/final writing/research prep for your final semester, and other related tasks that may overwhelm you in the spring term. Whether your career plans include applying for academic positions, positions in the regular world, or even a switch in direction, this residency experience is for you.
If you are in academics as a junior level assistant professor and looking for that intentional break to work on your tenure application, write your 2nd or 4th year plans, develop curriculum or plans for projects with tenure application goal in mind, this is a great residency option for you.
Maybe 2025 will be your best year ever because you spent 5 days preparing for all that might be possible.
